We introduce a new line of explicitly Pi01 statements requiring large
cardinals to prove, which feel substantially better than the line of Pi01
statements discussed in posting #222.
Especially, see Proposition 3 below.
This development of course does not obsolete the BRT development in any way,
shape, or form. However, the explicitly Pi01 statements below are
substantially better than any explicitly Pi01 statements presently coming
out of the BRT development.
##############################################
Let N be the set of all nonnegative integers. Let R containedin Np+k. Let E
containedin Np. We write
R<[E] = {y in Nk: (therexists x in Np)(R(x,y) and max(x) < max(y)}.
R<[E] is read "the upper image of R on E".
THEOREM 1. Let k,r >= 1 and R containedin Nkr+k. There exists a unique A
containedin Nk such that A U. R<[Ar] = Nk.
Let q >= 0 and a1,...,aq >= 0. We say that R containedin Np is order
invariant over a1,...,aq if and only if for all x,y in Np, if
(x,a1,...,aq),(y,a1,...,aq) have the same order type then x in R iff y in R.
Let u >= 0. E without u is the set of all elements of E none of whose
coordinates are u.
PROPOSITION 2. Let k,r,t >= 1 and R,S1,S2,... containedin Nkr+k each be
order invariant over some t factorials. There exists A containedin Nk such
that every nonempty Si[Ar] meets A U. R<[Ar] without (8krt)!!-1.
Here, different Si may use different factorials.
Obviously, if we remove "without (8krt)!!-1" then Proposition 2 immediately
follows from Theorem 1.
PROPOSITION 3. Let k,r,t,n >= 1 and R,S1,S2,...,Sn containedin Nkr+k each be
order invariant over some t factorials. There exists finite A containedin
Nk such that every nonempty Si[Ar] meets A U. R<[Ar] without (8krt)!!-1.
If we remove "without (8krt)!!-1" then Proposition 3 becomes provable in EFA
(exponential function arithmetic).
We can be more explicit about A.
PROPOSITION 4. Let k,r,t,n,m >= 1 and R,S1,S2,...,Sn containedin Nkr+k each
be order invariant over some t of the first m factorials. There exists a
finite A containedin [0,(8krtnm)!!]k such that every nonempty Si[Ar] meets A
U. R<[Ar] without (8krt)!!-1.
Clearly Proposition 3 is explicitly Pi02 and Proposition 4 is explicitly
Pi01.
NOTE: The quantities in Propositions 3,4 are ridiculously crude and can be
greatly reduced. We will worry about this later, when things stabilize. They
are safe.
THEOREM 5. Propositions 2-4 are each provably equivalent, over RCA0, to the
consistency of MAH = ZFC + {there exists an n-Mahlo cardinal}_n. If we
remove "without (8krt)!!-1" then they become provable in RCA0. In the case
of Propositions 3-4, we can use EFA instead of RCA0.
