When it comes to the category of (arbitrary) objects as a whole, the
proper conduct would be, I think, to invoke R. Carnap's distinction
between internal and external questions. Any question seemingly about
objects-without-qualification should in fact be regarded as a question
about some linguistic framework or other, i.e. a question about some
syntax or another. That should explain their apparent intractability. It
is indeed very tempting to consider such questions as *proper* (i.e.
internal), when in fact their rightful place is in meta-language.
