Logic position: The Department of Philosophy at Stanford University
has an opening for an Assistant Professor, three-year term, beginning
September 2002. Candidates must have a Ph. D. with specialization in
logic by the start of the appointment; while the degree need not be in
philosophy, candidates should have a genuine interest in that subject
and be prepared to interact with philosophers in a serious way.
Experience with philosophical aspects of logic and/or uses of logic in
other fields preferred, but applications are welcomed from all
qualified candidates. The department has teaching needs at the upper
division undergraduate level in logic; in particular it needs someone
who will do an outstanding job at teaching the course in first order
logic following the well-known text by H. Enderton, especially someone
who will be able to reach the diverse audiences (including students
from philosophy, mathematics, linguistics, cognitive science, and
computer science) that that course serves.
Details of the position: Salary competitive. Teaching load, 5 quarter
courses/year (three quarter system), reduction to 4 courses in the
third year. Includes advanced undergraduate courses and opportunity
to teach one graduate course or seminar each year.
Applications: Candidates should submit a CV, a cover letter describing
teaching experience as well as research interests and accomplishments,
at least three confidential letters of recommendation, and evidence of
exceptional teaching ability. Send materials to Prof. Solomon
Feferman, Chair, Logic Search Committee, Dept. of Philosophy, Stanford
University, Stanford, CA 94305-2155. Application deadline, December
1, 2001. Stanford is an AA/EOC employer.
