In his post of June 22, 2000 Harvey drew our attention to the new
book on Diophantine Geometry by Hindry and Silverman
and the fact that they mention the question of computing
the rational points on a curve of genus >1.

Andrew Wiles has a short description of the Birch
Swinerton-Dyer conjecture in which he also mentions this question
and remarks that there is an effective bound on the number of
rational points.
