POST-GRADUATE PHD STUDENTSHIPS
Arche Research Centre (http://www.st-and.ac.uk/~arche/)
University of St. Andrews
In connection with a five-year AHRB-funded project on the Logical and
Metaphysical Foundations of Classical Mathematics, Arche now seeks to
appoint to two postgraduate studentships for work on aspects of the project
under the directorship of Professor Crispin Wright and Professor Stewart
Shapiro.
For a characterisation of the issues under investigation, see the project
page (http://www.st-and.ac.uk/~arche/ahrb.shtml). However we will be
interested to receive proposals for work on other issues which you identify
as involved in the neo-Fregean programme or other collateral questions
falling within the spirit and general brief of the project.
For those potentially interested in the postgraduate studentships: you
should have or be expecting a first or high upper-second class degree (or
equivalent), or, alternatively have or be expecting a post-graduate
qualification in philosophy (or have undertaken equivalent course-work at
post-graduate level). You should be enthusiastic about going on to graduate
work in philosophy, with interests in formal and philosophical logic and a
liking for philosophy of mathematics, language and science.
If you possess only undergraduate qualifications, you will undertake a year
of course work in the St. Andrews-Stirling (SASP)
(http://www.st-and.ac.uk/academic/philosophy/GRAD/contents.html) graduate
programme before beginning three further years of doctoral research under
the supervision of members of the project team. If you already possess a
suitable post-graduate qualification (or have already undertaken suitable
post-graduate course work), you may begin doctoral research immediately,
and will normally receive three years funding.
The postgraduate studentships are restricted to those who do not already
possess a doctorate and have been resident in the UK for at least three
years before taking up the studentship or would otherwise be eligible for
AHRB postgraduate awards (for further guidance on eligibility see the AHRB
Notes for guidance concerning Postgraduate Studentships)
We are keen to identify, suitable potentially interested candidates for
these position as soon as possible. Appointments will start on October 1
2001. Formal advertisements will be posted in the normal way shortly, but
in the first instance we want to proceed by informal contact. Please direct
enquiries to the Centre's Deputy Director, Fraser MacBride
(flpm at st-and.ac.uk).
