Harvey, very nicely laid out with proper suspense building at the end so
one would want to see what is the defense of fom, etc.  I was thinking this
morning, before reading your posting, that physicists at least in the past
have come up with unrigorous, highly useful stuff like Dirac delta functions,
that took the rigorous types a long time to legitimize.  One expects,
even hopes, the application areas for mathematics will do such things again
and again.  Of course this may ensure some degree of employment (with modest 
pay for teaching engineers and doing administration (-8 ) for FOM types.
